A webinar is being organised by Kings College London where Hon’ble Dr Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, from Supreme Court of India, will be speaking about the role of courts in democracy, with a particular focus on India and the UK.

Honourable Dr Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, from India’s Supreme Court, will be speaking about the role of courts in democracy, with a particular focus on India and the UK.

This lecture is hosted by the King’s India Institute, The Dickson Poon School of Law and the Principal’s Office, King’s College London, in partnership with the Jindal Global Law School, O.P. Jindal Global University, India.

About the Speaker

Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud completed his LLB at Delhi University. He then studied at Harvard University after receiving the prestigious Inlaks Scholarship. At Harvard, he completed his Masters in Law (LLM) and Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD).

Chandrachud J practised as an advocate in the Supreme Court and the High Courts of Gujarat, Calcutta, Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi before becoming a judge of the Bombay High Court. He appeared before the Company Law Board, the Monopolies & Restricted Trade Practices (MRTP) Commission, the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) Board and National and State Commissions.

He was designated as Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in 1998. He served as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 to 2000. As an advocate, Justice Chandrachud’s most significant cases have involved constitutional and administrative law, the rights of HIV+ workers, religious and linguistic minority rights, and labour and industrial laws.

In 2000, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court. He took oath as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court in 2013.

After J Lalit’s retirement, Chandrachud J will likely serve as the 50th Chief Justice of India from November 2022. He is the son of the 16th and longest-serving Chief Justice of India, Justice YV Chandrachud.

The event is being conducted in hybrid mode. It can be attended at King’s Building, Strand Campus, London and online as well.

In-person participants can join this lecture in the Nash Lecture Theatre, King’s Building. The lecture will be proceeded by a Q&A session.
